Sodding is a very effective method of establishing grasses. It involves the transplantation of established turf from one area to another. Sodding has a number of advantages overseeding. It provides a mature turf in a single day, whereas seeding may take an entire season or more to mature. If quality sod is used, the turf is very uniform. The timing is not nearly as critical as with seed. The seed has to applied when the soil is warm enough for germination. Sod can be established any time the soil is not frozen from early spring to late fall. It can even be laid shortly before freezing. If it does not dry out during the winter, it will be fine in the spring.
